Backups and Sync in Authy

For greater convenience when traveling or switching devices, Authy allows you to backup and sync your accounts across multiple device and device types - phones, tablets and computers. Enabling backups requires you to set a password that is used to create a secure key that encrypts all of your configured Authy 2FA account tokens. The 2FA accounts can then be synchronized to another device or Authy app instance, but can only be unencrypted with the password you entered when enabling backup/sync.

Read more about how the tokens are backed up and encrypted on our blog, here

Alert: The Backups password is never sent nor stored in our servers for your security, so make sure you write it down somewhere safe or use a password only you know. If you ever forget your backups password, your account tokens will be permanently lost.

Users that are unable to pass the backups password check will be unable to decrypt these tokens, and will likely need to contact the 2FA account's support team to regain access to any account that you are now locked out of.
